Tanabe (田辺市 Tanabe-shi) is a city in Wakayama Prefecture. This article covers the main beachside city; the distant mountain district of Hongu is treated in a separate article.

Do

Hike on the Kumano Kodo Trail. This ancient pilgrimage route offers several possibilities. A popular 2 days trip starts from Takijiri (40 minutes bus ride from Tanabe) and goes to Hongu. From here you can either continue to Nachi or head north to the Koyasan. The tourist office will give you a free map and all the informations you need.
