In Eastern Lima, Line 1 of the Metro runs everyday from 06:00 to 23:00. You need to purchase a rechargeable card for S/5 (soles) to use the service and each trip costs S/1.50.

Ate Vitarte

  • 🌍 El Parque Zoológico de Huachipa, Av. Las Torres, Ate Vitarte (12º 00' 52 S 76º 53' 55 W), +51 1 356-3141. Daily 09:00-17:00. A zoo with over 200 species bordering on Río Rímac. In a rather dusty, industrial part of town but pleasantly surprising once inside. Animals are well kept. Monkey islands, big cat enclosures, a large walk through aviary, penguin pools with underwater windows and bridges above. For an extra S/3 (children S/2) walk through the time tunnel to the land of dinosaurs. Adults S/10, children S/6.
  • 🌍 Puruchuco (Museo de Sitio de Puruchuco), Carretera Central Km 4.5, Ate Vitarte. A short distance north of Estadio Monumental. The entrance is to the right of the park inbetween Paris and Helsinki. (12º 02' 56 S 76º 56' 04 W), +51 1 494 2641. Tu-F 08:30-16:00, Sa Su 09:00-16:00. Puruchuco (feather hat in Quechua). Museum and archeological site. The museum features ceramics, quipus, wool, cotton, needles, cloth, wooden carvings, burial sacks, head dresses. Tickets grant you entry to the ruins, the museum and include a small booklet. Adults S/5, students S/2, children S/1.

  • Hacienda Mamacona, Alameda Mamacona, Lurin, +51 1 99418 6995. Hacienda Mamacona is located next to the ruins of Pachacámac and can be seen from the Temple of the Sun. Hacienda Mamacona is open to the public and is home to some of Peru's finest Paso Horses and hosts numerous events including the Festival del Caballo de Paso Peruano and Concurso Nacional del Caballo de Paso.

  • 🌍 Cajamarquilla (The Dead City of Cajamarquilla, Complejo Arqueológico de Cajamarquilla). 09:00-16:00 - actual hours may vary. A pre-Hispanic city covering an area of 6 km². Cajamarquilla is considered to be the second largest adobe city in Peru. The surrounding area is industrial, dusty and dirty. The site is littered with garbage. There is a security guard on a motorbike onsite for your safety and the safety of the ruins. A central plaza has been restored and excavations are taking place around the site. There are hundreds of crumbling walls, rooms, doorways, enough to keep you occupied for quite some time. Located 10km east of Lima, just off Carretera Central. It is about 5 km north from el Parque Zoológico de Huachipa. If travelling by bus take the Luringancho bus or the Ate Vitarta and then change buses. Tours can be organised from Ate Vitarte Free.

Gamarra is a fantastic area to shop for a bargain. It's a busy area with street side shops. It doesn't have the security or the price tags of the modern shopping malls. Take only essentials and exercise caution in Gamarra.
