Type locality: Marquesas Islands, Hiva Oa Island, 9°41′S; 139°3′ W, 95–305 m depth (26–75 m depth).
Etymology: named after the French painter Paul Gauguin (1848–1903), who died in the Marquesas Islands on 8 May 1903.
