Notes:
A proposal by Hunt (1980) to relectotype the genus with Echinocactus helophorus Lem. has been declined to recommend conservation by the Spermatophyta Committee Brummitt (1987). Tjaden (1982) proposed to conserve Stenocactus over Echinofossulocactus. The proposal was rejected by the Spermatophyta Committee Brummitt (1987).
