Dear friends,
it is with great sadness that I have to report the passing of Christian Leuckert, the well-known German lichen chemo-taxonomist. Christian died at his home in Berlin, on 27 Jan 2011, at the age of 80 after a long period of suffering from cancer. Regardless the bad pains he had to suffer, he did not, up to the end, lose his intelligence, his interests and his fine sense of humor. (There is even a joint paper with him in press.)
A short biographic sketch is in J.G Knoph, K. Schrüfer, and H. Sipman’s (eds.) “Festschrift Christian Leuckert: Studies in Lichenology with Emphasis on Chemotaxonomy, Geography and Phytochemistry" (Bibliotheca Lichenologica, voL. 57, 1995).
At the Third IAL Symposion at Salzburg, Austria (in 1996) Christian was awarded the Acharius medal (see: International Lichenological Newsletter 29(3): 58–59, 1996 (or IAL homepage under “Awards: Acharius medaillists”). http://www.lichenology.org/index.html?/Awards/AchariusMedallists.html. Here you find another short biographic sketch. A full obituary will appear later.
Hannes Hertel
