Type locality: India: Karnataka, Astoli River, Kali River system, Ramnagar (15.430°N, 74.480°E), 630 m a.s.l.
Etymology: The species name chipkali means lizard in Hindi; it refers to the general lizard-like appearance of the fish in its habitat, where is it usually found adhering to rocks and boulders in fast-flowing streams.
