Killed at Baker's Creek, Mississippi, May 16, 1863 ; at one time commanding 1st division of the 1st corps. Army of Tennessee. Resigned March 4, 1863; brigade composed of the 2d, 15tli, ITth and 20th Georgia regiments and the 1st regiineut Georgia Regulars, Longstreet's corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Commanded Johnston's brigade, composed of the 5th, I2th, 20th and 23d North Carolina regiments and Wilson's battalion. Killed near Port Gibson May 1, 1863; brigade composed of the 20th, 23d, 30th, 31st and 46th Alabama regiments, Stevenson's division, Army of Tennessee. In command at Georgetown South Carolina, and also of Fort Moultrie and Sullivan's Island during the iron-clad attack upon Fort Sumter, April 7, 1863. Promoted Major-General January 17, 1863; assigned to com- mand of brigade at Evansport on the Potomac river; after- wards in command of Crittenden's brigade, composed of the 21st Georgia, the 21st North Carolina and the 16th Mis- sissippi regiments and Courtney's Virginia battery. Long- street's corps, Army of Northern Virginia; at the Battle of Fredericksburg, Trimble's brigade was composed of the 12th and 21st Georgia, the 15th Alabama and the 21st North Caro- lina regiments, Ewell's division, Jackson's corps, Army of Northern Virginia. Never mustered into Confederate service ; commanded Louis- iana State troops ; in charge of water batteries, at Columbus, Kentucky. Brigade composed of the 7th, 9th, 10th, 41st and 44th regiments Mississippi infantry and a battalion of Sharpshooters. In command of military post, West Point, Georgia; afterwards in command of a brigade composed of the 37th Georgia, the 20th, 15th and 37th and lOth and 30th Tennessee regiments, and the 4th battalion Georgia Sharpshooters.
