The nawd events of 1418 were of no importance. In 1419, to meet an apprehended design of the Spaaiards upon Portsmouth and Southampton, troops were repeatedly ,rrayed for the defence of the coast? In xSIay, the Earl of Suffolk was appointed Admiral of /qormandy; and in August a large arrest of shipping ;vas ordered in the western counties, in order to furnish a force to oppose a French squadron which, it ;vas reported, was about to proceed to the assistance of the Scots hy way of the Irish Sea. This force appears to have been entrusted to the command of ViiiJam, Lord 13otreaux. A few weeks previously, two merchants of Bristol, and one William Camoys, of Bayonne, had captured some carracks and other vessels belonging to the enemy, laden with merchandise, and httd received the thanks of the king?
In February, 1420, shipping was arrested for the passage of the Duke of Bedford to /qormandy, and of the Earl of Ormond to Ireland; there was a fresh alarm of a projected Spanish invasion; and the Scots committed some depre&;tions hy sea; but, as before, the naval events were not important.
On 5Iay 21st, the conclusion of the Treaty of Troyes put an end to the hostilities between England and great part of France; for although the D,uphin s and the p;;rty of the Armagnacs declined to recognise the arrangement, ttenry, Philip of ]3urgundy, and K;;therine, Queen Regent of France, ;vere parties to it, and one of its conditions ;vas the marri;ge of the Princess Katherine, daughter of the imbecile Charles I., to the King of England.
