West Front of St Marys Church, Portcbester, A.D. 1133 — 1153 The stores of valuable information, connected with the his- tory of monastic, and other ancient establishments, in these kingdoms, preserved in the muniment chambers of the chief landed proprietors of the country, are of considerable extent, and, in many instances, ahnost unknown, even to tJieir pos- sessors. It may be hoped that the periodical visits of the members of the Archaeological Institute to various localities chosen as the place of their annual assembly, must tend to stimulate enquiry, as Avell as the disposition to preserve these, or similar memorials of every kind, and to draw forth such concealed treasures, important in a high degree to the Archaeo- logist, as affording evidences, not merely of local or personal history, hut of tlic customs, the hal)itual feelings, and earnest
