In the evening a public dinner took place at the St. John's Room, at which the Marquis of Northampton presided, nearly 200 being present. Fbtday, Sept. 12. On this morning a large body of the members visited Porchester castle, every facility for the examination of wdiich was affbrded by the kind favour of the proprietor, Thomas Thistlethwayte, Esq., of Southwick Park. During the inspection of the outer walls of the castle Mr. Hartshorne pointed out the portions which he supposed to belong to the original Roman work, explaining the mode of structure, and making many interesting remarks. Another party visited Southampton and Netley, and the celebrated re- mains of Beaulieu abbey in the New Forest, and returned by the new Gothic church at Marchwood. At Southampton, Mr. Parker called their attention to the church of St. Michael, with its Norman tower-arches, and the rich font of the latter part of the twelfth century ; and at Holyrood
