The difcovery of this votive tablet feems to indicate this to have- been the iituation of the Roman ftation Longovtcum, mentioned in' the itinerary of Antoninus, where the imperial lieutenant of Bri- tain (as the Notitia informs us) kept a company of the Longovici in garrifon." ft. in.. The fmall o between C. and S. is probably a ftop, fmce no fuck name as Vi- binius Lucius Balbius occurs in the lift of confuls given at the end. of Horfley's Britannia Romana; the two letters C. S. are well known to fignify communi fumptu. Three altars have been found in Cumberland dedicated to the local deity Coctdeus. See Archaeologia, Vol. XI. p. 70, and Horf- ley's Britannia Romana, p. 557. The infcription in Horfley is DEO COCIDI, which he fuppofed to be the dative of Cocis, but from thefe recent difcoveries it ap- pears to have been Coctdeus or Cocid'ms, and an addition to the name of Mars. The O was probably omitted in the former for want of room, as the 1 is quite at the edge of the altar. April
