" portico. The word Porticus occurs feveral times in Bede, Alcuin, " Heddius, and other ancient Saxon writers, and is generally tranf- " lated by the EnglJJJi word Porch, and fo rnifleads us to think it (< fynonymous with Atrium, or Veftibulum, denoting a building with- " outfide the church, at the entrance into it : whereas this can by " no means be agreeable to Bede's meaning ; for in his account of " king Ethelbert's interment he exprefles himfelf in fuch terms as " will not admit of that fenfe. He was buried," fays Bede, " in " Portion Sit. Martini intra ecdejiam^ ; which mews that the Por- " ticus was within the church. And likewife in relating the burial
- of archbifhop Theodore, A. D. 690, he fays, he was buried in Ec-
" clefld Sti. Petri, in qua omnium Eptfcoporum Dornvenienfinrn fiint " corpora depo/lta^. In the church of St. Peter, in which all the " bodies of the bilhopsof Canterbtirywcrc interred, though he had " before faid [ 5 ] that they were all interred in the north portico, ex- " cept Theodore and Berftwald, whofe bodies were buried in ipfa Ec- " defia, in the church itfelf ; becaufe that portico could not con- " veniently hold any more ['].
