The Indians herein referred to as not living upon the rescrvation are of the Cowlitz, Chinook, Shoalwater Bay, and Humboldt tribes. They profess to desire a home at the mouth of the Hunboldt and Coinoose rivers, where they originated
Colcille and olher Tribes,-These Indians, numbering 3349, occu py the north eastern portion of the territory. They have uo relations with the Government, and, until the present year, havo had no reservation sct apart for them. They are now, however, to be cstablished, under an order of the President of July 2d, 1872, in the general section of the Territory wlere they ow are, upon u tract which is bounded on the south and east by the Co- lumbia River, on the west by the Okinnlkane River, and on the north by British Columbia. The tribes for whom this reservation is designed are known as Colvilles, Okinakanes, San Poels, Lake Spokancs, Cour d'Alenes, Calispells, and Methows. Some of these Idiuns, owever, have settled upon valuable tracts of land, and lave made cxtensive improvements, wile others, to a consider able number, lave begun farming in a small way at'varions points within the district from whieh it is proposed to remove their re- spective tribes. It is doubtfnl whether tlhese individnals will vol untarily renove to the reservation referred to, which is some dis tance west of their present location. It is proposed, therefore, to allow suc as are engaged in farming to remain where they are, if tlhey so desire. Owing to the influx of whites into the country thus claimed or occupied by theso Indians, many of tihem have been crowdcd out; and some of them have lad their own un- questionable improvements forcibly wrested from them. This for a time during the past summer caused considerable trouble, aud Berions difficulties were apprehended; but thus far peace bas been preserved by a liberal distribution among them of agrieult- ural implements, sceds, blankets, ctc.
