Alto, altus, or ALTO TENORE. Alto-is the term applied to that part of the great voce scale which lies between the mezzo soprano and the tenor, and which is assigned to the highest natural adult male voice. In scores it always signifies the counter tenor part. It is now used to indicate the tenor in instrumental music.
