Small town American lawyer, municipal judge, and a prolific writer of novels, short stories and newspaper and magazine articles, in periodicals such as Collier's, The Saturday Evening Post, Liberty, and the Century Magazine. Best remembered for his stories about "Old Reliable," a Reconstruction-era African-American character from Vicksburg. Some of his works were adapted into films.
