SULEIMANIEH, or Suleimania, the chief town of a sanjak of the same name in Asiatic Turkey, in the vilayet of Mosul, situated on a treeless plain in the Kurdistan Mountains, in the region known as Shehrizor, some 40 or 5o rn. from the Persian frontier, at an elevation of 2895 ft. It is a military station, and was founded towards the close of the 11th century. The estimated population is about 12,000, of whom 11,000 are Kurds, and the majority of the remaining 1000 Jews.
