The perfect tenses in English are past perfect simple, past perfect continuous, present perfect simple, present perfect continuous, future perfect simple and future perfect continuous. These tenses can be used in active and passive sentences but some passive forms are rarely used.

  • She had just eaten when the telephone rang (an example of past perfect simple (active))
  • I have lived in Sweden for 20 years (an example of present perfect simple (active))
  • The building has been destroyed (an example of present perfect simple (passive))
  • I will have been living here for 21 years in November (an example of future perfect continuous (active))

The perfect tenses are used in many different ways.
